Posted on 20. Apr, 2010 by Chris in Blog

Shrinking a DVD 9 to fit on a DVD 5 is mostly done by us, but sometimes we’d like to split a DVD 9 so that it can be burned to two DVD 5, without losing  the functionality of the menu and the video quality and any other special features. After all, DVD 5 is cheap and two DVD 5 is still much cheaper than one DVD 9. So if you are the one seeking for how to split a DVD, here are three ways for you to split a DVD using freeware without losing anything of the original DVD. For free video splitters to split you videos of other formats into however many parts conveniently, please refer to this article.

Method One:  Use DVD Shrink (for Windows)

DVD Shrink is well known for compressing DVD to half size but do you know it can also be used to split a DVD into 2 DVDs so that to avoid  losing many things which happens by compressing the DVD?  Using DVD shrink may be the simplest way to split DVD directly with only one program. It’s free and you can download it here and read the detail tutorial on using DVD Shrink to split DVD here.

Note: since DVD Shrink hasn’t been under development for years, it is not able to rip some DVDs with newer copy-protection. In this case, you can try to run DVD43 (not compatible with 64 bit Windows) in the background to decrypt the DVD. If this DVD43 also fails, you need to rip the DVD to the HD first using a capable DVD ripper.

Method Two: Use IfoEdit (for Windows)

There are many free DVD rippers online, find the one that works best for you to rip the DVD to your HD first. Then use IfoEdit to split the DVD. You can download IfoEdit here and read the detail tutorial on splitting DVD into 2 DVD-Rs using IfoEdit here.
